His brash behaviour and fiery temper on court dominated the men's game in the early 1980s. He was three times winner of Wimbledon 1981 and 1983-84. He also won three successive US Open titles 1979-81 and again in 1984. A fine doubles player, McEnroe also won ten Grand Slam titles, seven in partnership with Peter Flemming.
